Yorktown High School is a 1,600 student, comprehensive high school that has been repeatedly recognized for academic excellence. The school’s success is a result of its focus not only on intellectual development, but also through its commitment to the social and emotional development of its students. This emphasis on the education of the whole person distinguishes not only the interaction of the teachers and students but also informs the design of the Yorktown High School campus. Built on a very tight 11.5-acre site, the 350,000 gsf school will be organized around a central courtyard that creates a “heart” for the school and ensures pervasive natural light and views throughout the building. Yorktown High School is currently projected to attain LEED® Gold certification. The energy performance alone of the design is projected to save the county over $140,000 dollars per year over the base line model.
